DirecTiVo now available nationwide, please try to contain your excitement

A couple of months after making its long (really long) awaited appearance in “select markets” the DirecTiVo is now officially available nationwide. Die-hard fans of the combo of peanut remote and satellite TV finally have a crack at the box for the same $199 up front price tag, plus attached service fee, HD access fee and DVR fee. This also means foregoing things like 3D, multiroom support, Premiere UI and live streaming iPad apps, but that’s part of the deal for the TiVo HD DVR from DirecTV. Check the press release after the break for more details on what the box can do, or just hit the source link to head directly to DirecTV’s info page.Continue reading DirecTiVo now available nationwide, please try to contain your excitementDirecTiVo now available nationwide, please try to contain your excitement originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 08:30:00 EDT. German Court Upholds Previous Ruling, Says The Reworked Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N Can Be Sold

Mark one up for Samsung. After months of legal and PR battles, the South Korean company is finally able to sell and market their iPad clone in Germany. Just don’t call it an iPad clone anymore. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N (pictured left) is slightly different from the iPad — but that’s all that matters.

Samsung released the Galaxy Tab 10.1N late last year. This version features a silver boarder around the screen’s black bezel. The speakers were also relocated in a stereo configuration and now flank the screen. The original GalTab 10.1 was a blatant iPad ripoff. This version at least looks slightly different.

Just Follow The Cheezy Poofs: Cartman Spotted IRL

This is a picture of Cartman spotted IRL in Chicago. Apparently brobro dresses up like him on purpose, and is a good sport about posing with people and letting them take pictures. The person that took this one? They opted for the ol’ “pretend to be texting” move just to be safe. GOOD ONE, SISSY.

Hit the jump for one more way less candid shot.

Sony Tablet S finally rooted thanks to software exploit

For the Android rooting and hacking community, the Sony Tablet S has been a tough nut to crack. Locked down with some pretty aggressive security controls, those wanting root access on the device have been, until now, out of luck. That changes with the release of the first rooting exploit for the Tablet S, created by Linux hacker Dan "djrbliss" Rosenberg of Vulnfactory.org. Dan's root method is a relatively easy one-click process — simply put your tablet in USB debugging mode, then run the Windows batch file contained within the exploit pack. Dan notes that the exploit he uses could be fixed in future over-the-air updates — something which is made all the more likely by the posting of a detailed explanation of how the hack works. However, for eager Tablet S owners who want a little more control over their device, the fact that any software version is rootable will be welcome news. If you want to be one of the first to root your Tablet S, you can grab the exploit file from the source link below. Source: XDA; Thanks, jeffreytz!

OMG AR-15 Unicorn With Attached Chainsaw

This is an AR-15 assault rifle with attached battery-driven chainsaw and decked out with a unicorn motif. I love rainbows and stickers! I’m not sure if it’s FOR hunting unicorns or what, but I did just buy one and make my roommate run around the apartment with a party hat on his forehead while I shot him in the ass. “YOU DID WHAT?!” Haha, it was kinda loud for a BB gun. “AR-15′s AREN’T BB GUNS!” Sooooooooo — he’s not faking?

Hit the jump for a couple more shots and a video demo of the last thing the last unicorn ever saw coming.

Alienware X51 gaming PC: We go hands-on at the London launch event

Alienware’s latest PC is an attempt to fire a salvo right across the bows of Sony and Microsoft’s gaming flagships. It looks like the (slightly overweight) lovechild of the pair; like an alternate universe console. The X51 borrows liberally from the design schools of both the Xbox (matte sides) and the PlayStation 3 (slot-loading optical drive, front panel gloss). The Alienware logo rotates to suit both vertical and horizontal setups. The device is around the size of the original PS3, but it looked pretty petite in comparison to There’s a litany of holes on the back of the X51, including plenty of USB ports and audio options. Reacquaint yourself with some technical specifics after the break, alongside our hands-on impressions with Super Street Fighter IV.Gallery: Alienware X51 gaming PC: hands-on at launch eventContinue reading Alienware X51 gaming PC: We go hands-on at the London launch eventAlienware X51 gaming PC: We go hands-on at the London launch event originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 07:03:00 EDT.
